THE ALTERNATIVE CROSS STITCHING MAGAZINE

How to Use the Stitch Size Calculator

Not sure how large your finished cross stitch project will be on different fabric counts? Our Stitch Size Calculator makes it easy to quickly estimate the finished dimensions of your design before you start stitching.

Step 1 — Enter Your Stitch Width

In the “Width in stitches” field, enter the horizontal stitch count of your pattern.

Example:

  • A pattern that is 100 stitches wide would be entered as:
    100

Step 2 — Enter Your Stitch Height

In the “Height in stitches” field, enter the vertical stitch count of your pattern.

Example:

  • A pattern that is 140 stitches tall would be entered as:
    140

Step 3 — Select Your Fabric Count

Choose the fabric count you plan to stitch on from the dropdown menu.

The calculator currently supports:

  • 14 count Aida

  • 16 count Aida

  • 18 count Aida

  • 20 count Aida

  • 22 count Aida

  • 28 count Linen / Evenweave

  • 32 count Linen / Evenweave

For linen and evenweave fabrics, the calculator assumes stitching over 2 threads.

Step 4 — Click “Calculate”

Once your stitch dimensions and fabric count are entered, click the “Calculate” button.

The calculator will automatically display:

  • Finished size in inches

  • Finished size in centimeters

Example Calculation

A design that is:

  • 100 stitches wide

  • 140 stitches tall

  • stitched on 14 count Aida

would finish at approximately:

  • 7.1 x 10.0 inches

  • 18.1 x 25.4 cm

Helpful Tip

Higher fabric counts create smaller finished projects with finer detail, while lower fabric counts create larger finished pieces that may be easier to stitch for some stitchers.

Always remember to leave extra fabric around your design for framing, finishing, or hoop space. A good general recommendation is to leave at least 2–3 inches of extra fabric on all sides of your project.
